Bible Verses for a Broken Heart

For the ache after a betrayal, a breakup, a loss — when something in you has cracked.

Heartbreak takes many shapes: a relationship ending, a friend's betrayal, a dream that didn't come true, a prayer that seemed unanswered.

God close to the broken

For when you feel shattered.

  • "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

    Psalm 34:18

Nigh means near. A broken heart doesn't push God away — it seems to draw him closer.

  • "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."

    Psalm 147:3

Binding is slow, careful work — the way you'd dress a wound. Healing may take time, but it is tender.

  • "Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"

    Psalm 56:8

Not one tear is lost on God. What feels unseen to everyone else is noticed and kept.

  • "Jesus wept."

    John 11:35

The shortest verse in the Bible. Jesus knew he was about to raise Lazarus, and still he wept. Your tears aren't a lack of faith.

Scripture doesn't rush the broken-hearted. It says God draws near to them — not after they've healed, but while it still hurts.

You don't need to be okay to read this. Just let one verse sit beside you.

Healing that comes

For when you wonder if it will always hurt like this.

  • "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

    Isaiah 53:3

Jesus knows rejection from the inside. You are not explaining heartbreak to someone who has never felt it.

  • "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"

    Isaiah 61:1

Jesus read this passage aloud to describe his own mission. Binding up the brokenhearted is part of why he came.

  • "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."

    Psalm 73:26

When your own heart gives out, God becomes its strength. What you lost was precious; what remains is still enough.

  • "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

    Matthew 5:4

Mourning is not the end of the sentence. Comfort is promised — not instead of the sorrow, but to meet it.

  • "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

    Revelation 21:4

God himself will wipe the tears — a gesture as close as a parent with a child. This ache has an end.

Take the Next Step

be gentle with today

  1. 1Let yourself name what was lost, out loud or on paper, without explaining it away.
  2. 2Do one small kind thing for your body: drink water, step outside, or rest for twenty minutes.
  3. 3Reach out to one safe person and tell them, simply, "I'm having a hard time."

A prayer for a broken heart

Lord, something in me is broken, and it hurts to breathe.

Come near, the way you promised.

Bind up what I can't hold together,

and keep my tears until the day you wipe them away. Amen.

Questions people ask

Why would God allow my heart to be broken?

Scripture doesn't give a tidy answer, and it doesn't ask you to pretend. It does promise God's nearness to the broken-hearted (Psalm 34:18) and his ability to bring good even out of deep pain over time.

How long does it take to heal from heartbreak?

There's no set timeline. Psalm 147:3 pictures healing as binding up wounds — careful and gradual. Be patient with yourself, and if the pain stays crushing, a counsellor can be a real gift.

You are not too broken to be held. Let God be near tonight.
