Bible Verses for Forgiveness
For the weight you carry — whether it's something you did, or something done to you.
Forgiveness runs in two directions, and both are hard. Believing you're forgiven can feel too good to be true. Forgiving someone else can feel like letting them off the hook.
When you need to be forgiven
For guilt that won't let go.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
1 John 1:9
Faithful and just — forgiveness rests on God's character, not on how sorry you feel. Confession is simply telling the truth.
"As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us."
Psalm 103:12
East and west never meet. What God has forgiven, he doesn't keep within reach to bring back up.
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."
Isaiah 1:18
"Come now" — an invitation, not a summons. God wants to talk, and his goal is cleansing.
"Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."
Micah 7:18-19
God delights in mercy. Forgiving you isn't a reluctant concession — it's what he loves to do.
Scripture holds both together: we forgive because we have been forgiven. It also never pretends the hurt wasn't real.
Start with whichever side you need today.
When you need to forgive
For hurt that's hard to release.
"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
Ephesians 4:32
"Even as" — the forgiveness you've received becomes the pattern and the power for the forgiveness you give.
"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."
Colossians 3:13
Paul admits there will be real quarrels. Forgiveness isn't pretending nothing happened; it's choosing not to keep the debt.
"Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven."
Matthew 18:21-22
Forgiveness is often a repeated decision. If the anger returns tomorrow, you haven't failed — you forgive again.
"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."
Romans 12:19
Forgiving doesn't mean justice doesn't matter. It means handing justice to God instead of carrying it yourself.
"Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."
Luke 23:34
Prayed from the cross. When you can't forgive yet, you can borrow his words and ask God to do it through you.
Take the Next Step
release one debt
- 1Write down one thing — something you did, or something done to you — that still weighs on you.
- 2If it's yours, confess it plainly to God using 1 John 1:9. If it's someone else's, write "I release this to you, Lord" beneath it.
- 3Tear up or fold away the paper. If the feeling returns, repeat the prayer — forgiveness is often a practice, not a single moment.
A prayer for forgiveness
Father, forgive me — I know what I've done.
Thank you that you delight in mercy.
Help me forgive the one who hurt me,
and carry the justice I cannot. Amen.
Questions people ask
Does forgiving someone mean I have to trust them again?
No. Forgiveness releases the debt; trust is rebuilt over time through changed behaviour. You can forgive someone and still keep healthy boundaries — especially where there has been abuse or ongoing harm.
Why do I still feel guilty after asking God to forgive me?
Feelings often lag behind truth. 1 John 1:9 rests on God's faithfulness, not on your emotions. Keep returning to his promise; many people also find that confessing to a trusted friend or pastor helps (James 5:16).
What God has forgiven, he does not hold over you. And what you release, he will carry.
